Hello again,
While I often get the chance to look ahead at what the national tournament could be weeks in advance, it should not be forgotten how important these conference races are as well. National tournament aside, conference rivalries are the lifeblood of the sport, and getting to hang a banner in your home rink means so much for these programs. Whether it’s a regular season title, or an unexpected conference playoff appearance, I thought this would be a great time to take a look at what’s left to come in each conference as we approach the final three weekends of the regular season. I will do this in a two-step approach, to save the readers some time. First off, we’ll look at the first half of conferences on the men’s side, which includes the CNE, MAC, MASCAC, MIAC, and NCHA.
CNE

At the top of the conference, the CNE is a three horse race, with the contenders all being nationally ranked: Curry, UNE, and Endicott. All three of these schools have clinched a spot as one of the six teams who move onto the conference tournament, which will be huge for their at-large hopes into the NCAA tourney.
Each team has five games left to play. As stated at the top of the standings image, 6 of the top 8 make the playoffs, with the top 2 seeds getting a bye. So, there is a huge difference between who gets 2nd and 3rd. 3rd and 4th place will also get a home game in Round 1, so each position matters quite a bit.
Remaining Schedules
The Contenders:

Both UNE and Endicott will get their shot at Curry to try and capture the regular season crown, and home ice for the playoffs. With a 3 point lead over UNE, the Nor’Easters are the much bigger threat to Curry, as they are within striking distance. If UNE can win out, they will earn the conference title, as they have already split with Curry, meaning the tiebreaker would go to UNE. The Curry @ UNE game will be massive. If Curry can win that game, their margin for error will be much, much larger.
Endicott needs help from teams in the lower tier. What’s good for the Gulls, is that those teams are on the playoff bubble, and will be playing hard to pull a potential upset. Endicott has the tiebreaker over UNE, beating them in both meetings. The Gulls can also earn a potential tiebreaker with Curry if they can beat them in regulation, so the window is there for EC. They need to make up ground quickly though in order to catch one or both of the two teams in front of them.
The Playoff Bubble:

Three of these five will be qualifying for the postseason, while one will get a home game. JWU has the upper hand right now, but plays the toughest schedule remaining, with 4 of 5 against the “Big 3.” Will their 2 point lead be enough?
Wentworth has been playing better of late, but will be going up against a buzzsaw of a Curry team this weekend in a home and home. Stealing a point or two against the Colonels could prove to be massive.
Nichols has chances against the two teams in front of them, so I view those games as the biggest in this bunch in terms of who can get home ice in Round 1. The winner of the Wentworth vs. Nichols game gets the tiebreaker there, but it’s more than likely JWU will hold the tiebreaker against Nichols regardless of their final game’s result.
Suffolk may be a team to watch here, as they have given great teams scares throughout the season. They also are finished with the “Big 3,” and have a trio of games against the last place team. Don’t count out the Rams on not only making the playoffs, but earning a home game. Suffolk does hold the tiebreaker over JWU.
WNE has its work cut out for it, as they have slim hopes at making the tournament. If they can perform well against, or even sweep Suffolk, they are alive and well in the race. Anything short of that, and it may be an early end to the season for the Golden Bears.
My Call:
These are just guesses, and I have no idea how this will actually all play out in a sport that has so much parity. But I’ll take a stab at how I think this plays out:
- Curry (Conference Championship & First Round Bye)
- UNE (First Round Bye)
- Endicott (First Round Home Game)
- Suffolk (First Round Home Game)
- Johnson & Wales (Playoff Berth)
- Wentworth (Playoff Berth)
- Nichols
- Western New England
I think Curry is just too hot at the moment to be caught, but I wouldn’t be shocked if UNE makes it very close. I am a believer in Suffolk taking advantage of the easier end of the schedule and I see them jumping up to 4th place as well.
MAC

This is a brand-new ordeal for the MAC. This is the first year the MAC has an auto-bid after breaking away from the UCHC. Down the stretch, teams are feeling the heat to take advantage of the newly-acquired bid.
Stevenson was the preseason favorite to win the league. After a few short weeks, it looked like Wilkes was truly the one who was the flag-bearer for the MAC. Stevenson just beat Wilkes last weekend to cut into the lead a good deal. However, we’ll see if the Colonels can hold off the Mustangs in the last three weeks.
Most teams have five games remaining in their schedules. After a few cancellations, there are a couple teams that have six games left to play, and the frontrunner Wilkes, only has four. Unlike many other leagues, the MAC is more selective with itself playoff spots, as only the top 4 qualify. The top 2 will earn home ice in the semifinals. So far, Wilkes is the only one to have clinched a berth.
Remaining Schedules
The Contenders:

What makes this league so interesting this year is that top-to-bottom, it’s definitely one of the closest and most competitive. For Stevenson to win the regular season title and earn home ice, they need to outpace Wilkes by 8 points. The Mustangs do hold the tiebreaker earning 5 of 9 points against the Colonels. If Wilkes can earn 8 points of a possible 12, they clinch the title. Stevenson will need some help for sure. However, these teams can definitely be beaten by the remaining opponents, as everyone can put up a fight.
The Playoff Bubble:

With only 2 of these teams qualifying for the postseason, this will be a highly-contested race down the stretch. Not only does Neumann have the inside track with the most points, they also have 6 games left to be played. And on top of that, they will resume a suspended game against Misericordia in which they are up 3-0. So barring a collapse there, they’ll even have more runway.
On the other hand of that suspended game, Misericordia is definitely close to being eliminated at this point in the season. They have a chance, but it’s not likely given they probably have one more loss waiting for them at the end of the conference season.
In terms of the middle four teams here, I think there’s a good chance only one gets in, and it may come down to tiebreakers. There is so much crossover play amongst these teams that I think they all have a decent chance to make it. In terms of the two top teams, Arcadia, Alvernia, and LVC play both top teams. King’s only has Wilkes on the remaining schedule, and no Stevenson. The Monarchs are also playing well as of late, winning five straight.
My Call:
I can’t begin to predict all these scenarios and tiebreakers, but I’ll go with my gut below. This conference is so competitive, I don’t have a great read on this one:
- Wilkes (Conference Champion & First Round Home Game)
- Stevenson (First Round Home Game)
- Neumann (Playoff Berth)
- King’s (Playoff Berth)
- Arcadia
- Alvernia
- Lebanon Valley
- Misericordia
MASCAC

The MASCAC has been dominated by Plymouth State, as the Panthers have won 7 straight regular season titles, and are in the drivers’ seat for their 8th. However, their top challenger is much, much closer than anyone usually is. This will be a one-bid league most likely, but don’t be surprised if you see some drama down the stretch.
Teams have anywhere from 5-7 games left in their conference schedules, with lots of points still to be had in the standings. 8 of the top 10 receive bids to the postseason, with the top 4 getting home games in the conference quarterfinals. The current top 3 of Plymouth State, Anna Maria, and Salem State have clinched playoff berths thus far.
Remaining Schedules
The Contenders (clinched so far):

By far, the biggest game remaining on the schedule is Anna Maria @ PSU in the regular season finale. If Anna Maria wins that one, and sweeps the Panthers, there is realistic chance the MASCAC has a new regular-season champ for the first time in a long time. Obviously, AMC has to get to that game unscathed to give it a chance at winning the conference. The rest of the MASCAC is extremely tight, and the middle class of this league can catch any one of these teams on any given night.
PSU has been taken to OT twice, but has not lost to anyone besides the lone Amcat loss. Anna Maria has gotten tripped up twice by Worcester State and UMass Dartmouth, who they both have to play again. AMC has to be careful.
Salem State has a miniscule chance of winning the league, especially after losing to Plymouth State twice (both by a single goal). But they have started to play very well as of late, winning 9 of their last 11, and separating themselves away from the middle of the conference a bit. They’d need a miracle to win the league, so they should focus on getting home ice for Round 1.
The Playoff Bubble:

If I’m being honest, I would be downright shocked if Worcester, Fitchburg, Dartmouth, or Westfield miss out on the conference tournament. They are 1-2 wins away from clinching, and I don’t see any of them potentially losing out to miss the playoffs entirely in a league where 8 teams make it. However, those teams will all be fighting for that home ice position in 4th place, and may be able to catch Salem State for 3rd. If I had to pick the team to hold onto 4th or gain 3rd, it would be Worcester State. Their two games against Framingham help, and they’ve been playing the best of this group as of late.
MCLA, Rivier, and Framingham will be fighting for the last spot, and this weekend’s Rivier vs. MCLA game will go a long way to find out if this will be much of a race. If the Raiders can defend home ice against the Trailblazers, I think Rivier has a shot to knock out MCLA. Framingham does play both Rivier and MCLA, but they will need to stack a couple of wins. FSU has been playing teams closer in the last couple weeks, so maybe they’re due for a breakthrough. The Rams also have the extra game yet to play, giving them the extra chance at points.
My Call:
- Plymouth State (Conference Champion & First Round Home Game)
- Anna Maria (First Round Home Game)
- Worcester State (First Round Home Game)
- Salem State (First Round Home Game)
- UMass Dartmouth (Playoff Berth)
- Fitchburg State (Playoff Berth)
- Westfield State (Playoff Berth)
- Rivier (Playoff Berth)
- MCLA
- Framingham State
MIAC

In the last five years, I would argue that no conference is more even from top to bottom than the MIAC. The NESCAC comes in a close second, but in this league the last place team could beat the first place team on the road, and no one should be shocked. The level that each of these teams plays at is so razor thin from one another. This year is no different, but seeing Gustavus alone in first does raise a few eyebrows. The Gusties have struggled the past few years, but a new coach and new energy have sparked GAC to the top of the league standings with three weeks to go.
As if this conference wasn’t competitive enough, only the top 5 make the tournament, so teams will be fighting tooth and nail to get in. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams will get a bye, while #1 and #2 have home ice in the semifinals. Six of the nine teams have six games remaining, while the remaining three teams have one off week left, and will only play four more conference games. No one has clinched a spot yet.
Remaining Schedules
The Contenders/Playoff Bubble:

Yes, I combined both categories into one for the MIAC. It’s just that close. At this point in the year, the only school I would be even a little bit shocked to see make the playoffs is Augsburg (last year’s regular season champion). Even still, they’re just 4 points out of a spot, but do have only four games remaining.
Gustavus is in their toughest stretch of the season at the moment, as they just split 3 points a piece with Bethel in a pair of overtime games, and now have Saint John’s and Scholastica the next two weeks, as they are the next teams up on their tail along with the Royals. I would have to say those series will decide who can not only win the conference title, but who might miss the postseason as well.
In terms of who is hot and cold, it appears that Hamline and Saint Mary’s are potentially starting to fade as the season winds down, but I’m not ruling them out. On the other side of the coin, the Cobbers of Concordia seem to be picking things up down the stretch. Again, this could mean nothing come this weekend, but those are the recent trends. St. Olaf also seems to play very well at home, but not so great away from home.
These upcoming series will be absolute wars to determine who finishes where, and I’m so thrilled to see some of these historical rivalries have such high stakes. The only thing I can say with confidence is that in the MIAC, playoff spots will be decided on the final Saturday of the regular season. Book it.
My Call:
- Bethel (Conference Champion & First Round Bye & Semifinal Home Game)
- St. Scholastica (First Round Bye & Semifinal Home Game)
- Saint John’s (First Round Bye)
- Gustavus (First Round Home Game)
- Concordia (Playoff Berth)
- St. Olaf
- Saint Mary’s
- Hamline
- Augsburg
NCHA

In my opinion, while the MIAC is the most competitive conference top-to-bottom this year, I believe the NCHA is the overall best conference in D-III men’s hockey this season. While the teams at the bottom do not have great records, they’ve shown they can skate with the top tier programs, and occasionally pull off an upset. Towards the middle of the pack, we have some extremely high-quality programs and coaches. At the top, we have four legitimate national title contenders who could win the whole thing. This past weekend helped separate things a good deal, but there is still a lot to decide.
Just like the MASCAC, 8 of the 10 teams qualify for the postseason, with the top 4 getting home games in the quarterfinals. With each team only having four games remaining over the next two weekends, the playoffs are coming very quickly in the NCHA. The top 3 of Aurora, Trine, and St. Norbert have all clinched playoff spots, and also clinched at least one home playoff series.
Remaining Schedules
The Contenders:

As I stated before, this previous weekend was the focal point of the title race in the NCHA. Aurora swept Trine, and SNC swept Adrian, causing a bit of a shakeup at the top of the standings. Not only did Aurora take and St. Norbert emerge victorious, they are also avoiding any more top tier teams in the regular season. Trine and Adrian still have to face off to close the regular season.
MSOE is no joke, so this race is certainly not over, but Aurora is definitely in the driver’s seat if they can win a couple more games. Trine and SNC still have a shot mathematically, but If Aurora can rack up 8 of a possible 12 points, they clinch the conference and #1 seed. Keep in mind, that’s if Trine wins out. No, Adrian can’t win the regular season title anymore, but them along with the other three, need to win as many games as possible to preserve their at-large resumes, should they not win the automatic bid.
The Playoff Bubble:

While Dubuque is definitely up against it in terms of making the playoffs (despite being a tough out many times), at least one of the other five in this group will also be hanging up the skates early this year. There’s just a three point difference between the five teams. All five teams are playing one of the four title contenders as well. Even if you just assume the favorites win all of those games (probably not a smart assumption), then it would all come down to that last weekend of games.
The MSOE/Lake Forest series along with the Marian/CUW series would prove massive. Lawrence needs to pick up two wins this weekend to help their case, as they have St. Norbert next weekend. However this shakes out, this will be tight, and most likely determined by who can defend their home ice. An upset this weekend would certainly help. Look for Concordia to make a strong push to get points this weekend, as they are hosting a slumping Adrian team.
My Call:
- Aurora (Conference Champion & First Round Home Game)
- St. Norbert (First Round Home Game)
- Trine (First Round Home Game)
- Adrian (First Round Home Game)
- MSOE (Playoff Berth)
- Concordia-WI (Playoff Berth)
- Marian (Playoff Berth)
- Lawrence (Playoff Berth)
- Lake Forest
- Dubuque
