#2 Adrian vs Oswego

We’re in Oswego, NY this afternoon for a fun east/west matchup that’s become an often occurrence over the years, #2 Adrian vs Oswego.

Yes, we’re at another Adrian game, but it’s always a fun, competitive matchup between these two teams (and it’s also a 3pm game an entire ten minutes from my residence.

Adrian’s coming off a victory over a very skilled #11 Cortland team last night and looks to get a clean sweep on the weekend, while Oswego looks to get their first win of the year after falling to #1 Hobart and tying Elmira.

This one should be interesting between Adrian who’s appeared in the past three Frozen Fours (won title in 2022 vs Geneseo), and Oswego who’s in a spot with 17 Freshman and a few Sophomores.

1st Period

To start the game, both teams seem to be playing evenly, going back and forth, each with a few chances here and there, Oswego with the best of them.

Adrian goaltender #33 Dershahn Stewart played exceptional last night vs Cortland, continuing to here.

Oswego takes a penalty at 9:17, it’s #18 Justin Ryan for interference in front of the net involving Stewart. Stewart was contacted and his stick fell, causing the penalty to be called.

Oswego’s first penalty kill of the night looks good, not allowing many shots on net and getting a shot of their own to force a faceoff in the Adrian end to finish it off.

With just over seven minutes left in the period, Adrian gets a chance in front of the net, but it’s missed, there haven’t been many chances for each team, mostly back-and-forth, physical play.

With 5:06 left, Adrian picks up their first penalty, it’s #22 Matt Couto for holding-a-stick, Oswego goes to the powerplay.

Early in the powerplay, Oswego looked good, creating a few chances, but Adrian kills it off.

Adrian scores the first one of the night, it’s #36 Ryan Pitoscia giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Shortly later, Adrian scores again, it’s #24 Alec Lovisek to make it 2-0 with 2:34 left in the period, signs of last night from Adrian, a quick pair of goals.

Oswego’s period doesn’t get better, a minor penalty for #16 Josh Simpson, hitting-from-behind, Adrian heads to the PP.

Oswego kills off the penalty, then Adrian quickly gives Oswego a late 5v3 powerplay that’ll carry over to the 2nd period, #36 Ryan Pitoscia, minor for holding and #6 Austin McCarthy for high-sticking.

1st period ends with a 2-0 Adrian lead. 1:37 remain on the Oswego 5v3 powerplay.

2nd Period

Oswego began the period trailing 2-0 on the scoreboard, but a 2-man advantage on the ice. Adrian proceeds to kill off the 5v3 and gets a whistle right as the time expires for them to get fresh legs on the ice.

Much like the 1st period, it’s back-and-forth with both getting a few chances, Adrian with the better of them, but Adrian gets their 3rd, it’s #15 Patrick Saini. Adrian leads 3-0 with 13 minutes left in the 2nd period.

#1 Brandon Milberg enters the game midway through the 2nd, three was enough for Oswego HC Ed Gosek.

It’s pretty quiet and then #13 Brad Somers gets the rebound goal to give Adrian a 4-0 lead with 7:44 left in the 2nd, nothing much Milberg could’ve done there as he saved the first one.

Adrian picks up a penalty, #11 Riley Murphy for slashing. They’d then get another with 50 seconds left in that penalty, #22 Matt Couto for an obvious slash. Oswego 5v3 for 50 seconds and 2:26 left in the period.

Oswego scores their first 17 seconds into the 5v3, it’s #4 Travis Baker cutting into the Bulldogs lead, they trail 4-1.

Adria would kill off the 5v4, the period ends and it’s 4-1 Adrian headed into the final period of play.

3rd Period

The final period opened with Oswego forcing a few chances in front of the Adrian net, but Stewart and the defense kept it out.

A quiet period after the quick Oswego flurry, nothing out of the ordinary happening for the next five or so minutes.

Stewart makes a 1v0 save to keep it a three-goal lead for Adrian, but a turnover forced by Oswego leads to a Laker goal at 9:28 by #28 Ryan Burke, the Bulldog lead gets cut in half with just under ten minutes left in the game.

Oswego picks up a minor penalty a shortly later (10:11) by #81 Nico Paone.

Adrian gets a penalty right back for high-sticking, #28 Cam Babiak. Oswego kills off theirs and has a powerplay for 1:15.

An Oswego shot is deflected and creeps by the post to stay out, they then get a wide-open one-timer and fail to convert. Penalty ends and the game remains 4-2 AC.

The game would end here, Adrian heads back to Michigan with a pair of wins, defeating Oswego 4-2.
